REFLECT

The comprehensive planning process begins by reflecting on where we are today:

What are the characteristics that define and set Forsyth County apart?

We look at existing trends, recent changes, and our current comprehensive plan along with other related planning efforts – what do they tell us about where we are and where we are going?

ENVISION

We then initiate community dialogue about our long-range vision, a renewed discussion about what Forsyth County should be and feel like in the future:

We start with what’s documented in our current plan – and ask, has that changed?

Part of this process involves identifying the overarching goals for the County that support the vision and identifying our different needs and opportunities.

Then, the character and location of development that would support the chosen vision is determined – looking at how different areas of our County may have unique goals, policies and desired outcomes.

PRIORITIZE

We then work with community members to identify our communitywide priorities and begin developing a plan for implementing development objectives of different sub-areas of the County.

REVIEW & FINALIZE

Finally, the plan is reviewed by community members, the Georgia Mountains Regional Development Commission, the State of Georgia, and our neighboring communities prior to final plan edits and formal action by our Board of Commissioners.

COMP PLAN 101

Forsyth County is updating its Comprehensive Plan ahead of schedule to address the topics that are on residents’ minds now – including growth, housing, density, and employment. Our County’s Comprehensive Plan is the umbrella policy document for Forsyth County’s future growth and development. It plays an important role in rezoning and development decisions and also establishes community goals and priorities for the County’s future. The last update of the County’s Comprehensive Plan occurred in 2012. The County is proactively updating its plan to address increasing development and associated opportunities and challenges that come with that.

What it is...

  • A long-term vision for growth/development
  • Documentation of priorities
  • An action plan to address those priorities
  • A guide for local decision-making
  • An umbrella policy document outlining our County's preferred future, intended to be flexible and updated over time

What it isn't...

  • A document requiring mandatory conformity
  • A rework of our unified development code or other ordinances
  • A definitive answer for unforeseen challenges
